waiting to surface

October 13, 2010

I saw this image on Newsweek’s Back Story a few weeks ago, and the thought of it keeps resurfacing in my mind.  The miners and their families know a thing or two about waiting; I don’t know if they’d refer to it as “art” though. As I write this, the 17th miner is waiting for his turn in the shaft. The 21st miner, however, possibly has mixed feelings as he waits for his new life at the top…

I can be quite patient at times; and more accepting than most of the prospect of uncertain outcomes. But confined spaces are another issue entirely. Sometimes we know what needs to be done to reach a goal, but we have no control over the process or the work that needs to be done to get there. So we trust, we hope, we wait.
