photobooth contest – category #1 winner!

September 26, 2010

The contest announcement you’ve been waiting for!

Our little contest reached photobooth fanatics all over the world. We didn’t get as many entries as we hoped for, but they came from places all over the world, wherever photobooths could still be found.

Thanks for including us in the contest — it was fun to take part and we really enjoyed seeing the results.
So the votes are in — we thought there was a clear standout for the #1 spot… We tried to be strict adherents to the assignment (Waiting) focusing on our area of judging (Narrative) while not totally ignoring the overall artistic merit.

Tim and Brian’s pick was also a favourite of Category #2 judge, Meags Fitzgerald:

I’m impressed with the piece because of the levels of thought in the concept. It references one of photobooths’ original purposes as passport photos while including the concept of “the wait” in a topical manner. In addition to being well considered visually, the satirical message of ethnicity vs. citizenship is also effective. From a technical stand point, it was a good strategy to use a photograph of a “British citizen” in the fourth frame rather than try to do a quick costume change. This piece is the strongest “Out of the Box” idea because it considers the world outside of the photobooth and conveys a clear message within the restrictions of photobooth pictures.

Category #3 judge, Matt Charnock also said, “the stories of migrants being converted to being english was a visual feast especially with the poster that came with it, poignant, relevant simple and well done”

The Category #1 Winner is Kate Tyler with her British Passport piece! Congrats Kate, on winning two of three categories – I can’t argue with the judges!

The five-strip combo really packed a punch, but it was this poster that put it over the top for me. It shall likely remain the largest piece of overseas mail that I receive for the remainder of my life.
