Wait + Hope = Wisdom

January 6, 2010

A generic search for quotes about “waiting” generates a veritable mixed bag of motivational business-types, nay-saying politicos, and hopeful clerics.

If I’m going to use a quote, I like to be sure that the writer actually had something valuable to say on either side of the sixty-sixes and ninety-nines.

Here are a few thoughts from three established authors who were (are) known to spout off more than a few quotable quotes and memorable lines.

“Before you speak, listen.
Before you write, think.
Before you spend, earn.
Before you invest, investigate.
Before you criticize, wait.
Before you pray, forgive.
Before you quit, try.
Before you retire, save.
Before you die, give.”
~William Arthur Ward

“Wesley: I told you I would always come for you. Why didn’t you wait for me?
Buttercup: Well, you were dead.
Wesley: But death cannot stop true love…All it can do is delay it for a while.”
~The Princess Bride

“All human wisdom is summed up in two words – wait and hope”
~Alexandre Dumas Père

Other than the electrical utility bill and the property tax assessment, I didn’t get any exciting mail today. So I will wait, and hope that I get some tomorrow.
